It’s that time of the year friends, you know when it’s a new year and all. I have enjoyed the better part of the past few days in the bed with flu-like symptoms reading Facebook posts and tweets. You know the ones I am talking about “In 2012….” then that person will give you their year in review. No harm in that, and a lot of it is actually interesting (well sorta). Also with the new year come the resolutions people typically always have. You know to become a better person, more fit, make more money. It’s a new year to be new you after all, right?
You don’t need a new year to be a new you, and nothing you or I do will make life any better or “new”. We will still be living in our same old dead ways, they may just look different. We must respond like Jesus says in Matthew 4:17 which is to repent. The only way to become a new person is through the redemptive power of Jesus Christ. WIthout that who we really are will not change in any sense. We may lose the weight, get the girl, or get that promotion but there will still be that void. Nothing we do will make us better, and 2013 will end and the 2014 will be here.
Before you and I were saved we were born as children of the darkness, born under the wrath of God (Ephesians 3:2). As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, in Christ we are a new creation the old has passed and the new is here. Only Christ can make us new, and it is certainly not an overnight change. It is a lifetime of learning, growing pains, and community. I jotted down some tips that may help you see a change in your life and others in the coming year. These aren’t my ideas but rather biblical truths that men in my life have shared and taught me.
1. Get an accountability partner
This is one of the most crucial things in my life. I have a few men that I enjoy doing life with in terms of accountability. Who are not afraid to call me out if I am wrong, or if I am doing questionable things. To push me to study more scripture and to pursue righteousness. They do it out of love, and I do it back as well. If you don’t have one get one, Christianity is a team sport.
Galatians 6:1-5, Proverbs 27:17, James 5:16
2. Have a daily quiet time
Not only will you understand the Word better, but I fully believe you will see a difference in your life. There is a noticeable difference in the days when I spend the morning in scripture and prayer, and days that I do not. The Bible is the most sold and read book in the world, don’t you want to read it?
Psalm 119:105, 2 Timothy 3:16-17
3. Get involved in a small group
Be involved with a group of believers of the same gender who are passionately studying God’s Word together. Your accountability partner may even be within this group. Life change happens in small groups and families are created. This is a chance for you to grow exponentially in your walk with other believers. Working with them for the further proclamation and glorification of the Father.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
4. Get Involved
A lot of people will say you don’t have to go to church to be a Christian. I don’t think a Christian should every say that, and should want to be involved in church! God has given us all talents from music, to speaking, to technology. You know what you’re good at so use it to glorify God by using your talent at the church you attend. Don’t have one? Fine one, that’s Biblical.
Hebrew 10:24-25, 1 Corinthians 12:12-31
5. Make Disciples
If there will be anymore disciples of Christ Christian it will depend on you and I. Commit yourself to meeting with a lost person, or new believer and helping them. Someone did that with me and I will never ever forget that, and now that I have the opportunity it is one of the most rewarding things. I don’t have all the answers and I doubt you will. We are commanded though to go make disciples, so in 2013 follow this command of Christ and share the awesome gift we have with the world. I can’t think of anything more dangerous or insulting than ignoring a command from the King of Glory who died so we could live. All authority in Heaven and earth has been given to you and I! How cool is that? So instead of wasting our lives why not put it to use for the purpose we are here, to give Him all the glory.
Matthew 28:18-20, Romans 12:2
